He Ordered Several Litres a Week
Napoleon had already been using a commercially available Eau de Cologne since his Italian campaigns, rubbing it generously over his body after bathing. At Saint Helena, when supplies ran low, his second valet, the Mamelouk Ali, real name Louis-Étienne Saint-Denis, recreated an artisanal version from memory and the dictionaries of the imperial library. It is this 1819 formula, and this formula alone, that we craft today in Fouras, facing the Île d'Aix.
