Authenticity

The Osmothèque:The International Fragrance Conservatory

Founded in 1990 in Versailles, the Osmothèque is the only institution in the world dedicated to preserving and certifying historic fragrances. Its mission: to safeguard formulas belonging to the world's olfactory heritage, verify their authenticity, and guarantee their fidelity through time.

“Every formula submitted undergoes a thorough historical and chemical analysis before any validation or certification.”

The Napoleon Eau de Cologne formula is officially registered and preserved in the Osmothèque's archives. It is the only Napoleonic Eau de Cologne to hold this recognition, every other version is merely a modern interpretation.

The Institut de France

The Institut de France brings together France's five academies, including the Académie française and the Académie des Beaux-Arts. It is the country's most prestigious academic body. When one of its members attests to something, it isn't an opinion, it's an expert judgment of the highest authority.

“This is not a simple opinion. It is the word of an academician who has studied the question in its full historical and olfactory depth.”

Maître André Damien, member of the Institut de France, publicly stated that this Eau de Cologne is “the only olfactory keepsake that has been preserved of the Emperor.” A precise, deliberate, and unambiguous statement of its unique authenticity.

Made in Fouras. The Last French Soil.

The place of manufacture is not a marketing detail. It is a fundamental historical and symbolic decision. Fouras is the last place where Napoleon Bonaparte set foot on French soil, on 8 July 1815, before his final exile to Saint Helena.

“To make this fragrance here, and nowhere else, is to close a loop that history had left open since 1815.”

The workshop is based in Fouras, following traditional craft methods. Quantities are deliberately limited. Every bottle represents a decision to keep alive something that time could have let disappear. We work by hand, following the codes of French craftsmanship, from production through to boxing and parcel preparation. The same care for the right gesture, inherited from the original manufacture, can be found in our current methods :

Formula Unchanged Since 1819

The fourth guarantee is not a certification granted by an outside institution, it is a commitment we make ourselves. No ingredient has been substituted. No proportion has been altered. No concession has been made to modernity or industrial convenience.

“Changing the formula would have been simpler, cheaper, perhaps more profitable. We chose not to. It is our only commitment.”

Ingredients are sourced in Europe, from their regions of origin whenever possible, Calabrian bergamot, Sicilian lemon, Grasse neroli, Provençal rosemary and lavender. Each batch is checked to ensure it meets the standards Ali established in 1819.

How Did We Prove Authenticity?

Certification is the result of years of research, chemical analysis, and dialogue with France's most demanding institutions.

Historical and Archival Research

Locating and authenticating the original document recorded by the Mamelouk Ali in 1819. Carried out in collaboration with the National Archives and Napoleonic museums.

Chemical Analysis of the Ingredients

Verifying that every ingredient listed in Ali's formula matches what was available in the early 19th century. Validated by experts in historic perfumery.

Submission to the Osmothèque

Presenting the complete file to the International Fragrance Conservatory in Versailles. A thorough review of the formula and its historical traceability.

Validation and Official Registration

The Osmothèque validates the formula's authenticity and proceeds with its official registration in its permanent archives. Certification is granted.

Recognition by the Institut de France
