A Formula That Has Travelled Through History

Napoleon used several litres of it every week. Two centuries later, the formula hasn't changed a single ingredient.

Two Centuries of One Formula

The Man andHis Fragrance

Napoleon had a singular relationship with Eau de Cologne. Where other rulers surrounded themselves with gold and jewels, he swore only by this fresh, invigorating fragrance, which he had brought to him in extravagant quantities.

“He rubbed it on vigorously every morning, head, neck, chest. An unchanging ritual, even at the height of his campaigns.”

— Constant, the Emperor’s valet

Sixty bottles a month. The figure is staggering. On the island of Saint Helena, exiled and diminished, Napoleon kept using his Eau de Cologne. It alone remained unchanged in a world that no longer resembled him.

The Mamelouk Aliand the Formula

Ali was far more than a servant. Faithful among the faithful, Louis-Étienne Saint-Denis accompanied Napoleon all the way to Saint Helena. At the Emperor's request, he spent the early years of the exile developing an Eau de Cologne for his personal use.

“By combining various citrus fruits and spices, he created a fragrance that was both fresh and subtle, which the Emperor used daily until his death.”

In 1819, he set the formula down in writing. This document survived the centuries. This exceptional formula continues to carry forward a unique olfactory heritage.

Saint Helena.Exile and Loyalty.

In 1815, after Waterloo, Napoleon was exiled to the island of Saint Helena. The empire had collapsed. But the Eau de Cologne kept arriving, despite the distance, despite English surveillance, despite illness.

“At Saint Helena, the Eau de Cologne was the last thread connecting him to who he had been.”

In the inventory of his personal effects after his death in 1821, several bottles of Eau de Cologne were found. Faithful to the end. It is this olfactory thread that we carry forward today.

Fouras.The Last French Soil.

On 8 July 1815, Napoleon left Rochefort for Fouras. He knew it was the end. A few days later, he boarded HMS Bellerophon and would never see France again.

“To bring this fragrance back to life where Napoleon said his farewell to France is to root its story in a deeply symbolic place.”

The manufacturing process remains artisanal. Quantities are deliberately limited. Every bottle leaves the workshop with the same intent as in 1819: to create something worth passing on.

The Formula Unchanged Since 1819

Designed at a time when synthetic chemistry did not yet exist, Ali's formula relies entirely on natural essential oils of citrus fruits and spices.

A Family Story

This story isn't just about an emperor in exile, it's also a family story. Jean-François Marcilly, a pharmacist and long-time enthusiast of the Napoleonic era, is the project's originator.

In the 1990s, he secured the exclusive rights to manufacture and market this one-of-a-kind Eau de Cologne, coming to an agreement with two men who each held part of its legitimacy: Maître André Damien, member of the Institut de France and owner of Ali's formula, and Jean Kerleo, the “nose” who had recreated it identically for the Osmothèque.

It was from this meeting between a passionate pharmacist, an academician, and a great perfumer that the making of the Emperor's Authentic Eau de Cologne was born in Fouras.

Today, it is his daughter Pauline and her husband Victor who carry on this craft. “Now retired, my father passed on his know-how and his company to us,” says Pauline. “My husband and I continue this unique craft and keep this piece of French heritage alive.”

The workshop in Charente-Maritime, where this artisanal production continues, was the subject of a France 3 news report, which can be found on this same page.
